Villeroy & Boch History

Villeroy and Boch began in 1748, Francois Boch an accomplished iron founder, official Royal Cannon Founder with the title “Bombardier du Roi” established a new business with his 3 sons in the picturesque village of “Audun-le-Tiche in Lorraine” in North-Eastern France, right on the borders of Luxembourg, Germany and Belgium. Their initial market was Luxembourg, with Empress Maria Theresia authorising the set-up of a new manufacturing site in the Province of Luxembourg itself. An early example of Villeroy and Boch’s pioneering nature would be Nicolas Villeroy acquiring an earthenware factory in what is now names Wallerfangen, Germany, in 1797 it was the first ceramics manufacturer to use coal as a fuel. Later in 1815, the copper printing process was brought in allowing mass manufacturer. A few years prior in 1809, and back to the Boch family, Jean-Francois Boch purchased a former Benedictine Abbey on the River Saar, where he set up a modern, mechanised system of tableware production. As the company grew and developed over the years it gained European and then worldwide recognition for its artistic and quality ceramics, years of development ensued with the third generation Boch Jean-Francois Boch democratising tableware by developing a more affordable method of production and gaining the Boch’s their first award, a Gold Medal at the 1822 Prussian trade exhibition. The Merger of Villeroy and Boch came about in 1836 had factories close to each other and agreed to merge in order to be more competitive against dominant English industry. This collaboration of innovation, entrepreneurial spirit and creativity was a winning combination. Over the years connections with great artists, nobility and esteemed projects ensure the integrity of the name is maintained and respected.
